Butler, the county seat of Taylor County, was incorporated on February 8, 1854; however, the charter for the town was not received until 1870. Butler was named for General William Orlando Butler, a distinguished hero of the Mexican War.The Taylor County courthouse was built in 1935 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse's bell tower was restored in 1995.

Savannah, located in east, was founded by James Oglethorpe. Georgia served as a buffer between Spanish Florida and the English Carolinas and also as a place for those in debt to start anew. Georgia's main cash crop was rice and after Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793, cotton became the main cash crop. Savannah did not see too much fighting during the Civil War because in 1862, at the start of the war, the Union forced the surrender of Fort Pulaski on Tybee Island which effectively closed the city. Today, Savannah is filled with beautiful, Victorian homes and, thanks to The Historic Savannah Foundation, everyone can enjoy these homes and the rest of the historic town of Savannah.
